According to the official website of the Cyberspace Administration of China (the “CAC”), the CAC recently responded to strong complaints by Chinese netizens by joining hands with other authorities to conduct a campaign against the unrestrained spread of mobile apps that violate the law or contain vulgar content. The authorities shut down a total of 3,469 illegal apps that featured pornographic content, gambling, fraudulent monetary charges, data theft, user fraud, illegal games and unhealthy learning apps.

For the purpose of strengthening the regulation of mobile apps, the CAC has promulgated a series of rules and regulations including the Administrative Provisions on Mobile Internet Applications and Data Services, the Provisions on the Administration of Online Live-streaming Services and the Provisions on the Administration of Data Services Provided through Chat Groups on the Internet. This legislation specifies the responsibilities to be undertaken by mobile application developers, operators and platform providers.
